Cupcake Core Samples

We talked about the principles of cross-cutting, superposition, etc. and discussed how geologists might use these principles to learn about past geologic events. We also talked about ways that a geologist might access the layers beneath the earth; for example, through core sampling.

Using this basic lesson plan, I made marbled cupcakes and we used straws to take "core samples" which we could then analyze for mineral content, etc.

We could also use the weathered and eroded "sediment" at the bottom of this cupcake cliff to learn about an area's geologic composition.
