Cinder Cone Model

Here is a model of a cinder cone volcano. (We did all these models on the same day. It was a good overview of different ways volcanoes are formed. We read some books that classified more than three types of volcanoes, but these models were still valuable, I thought.) You just rig up a method where you can blow sugar out of a small straw through a hole, from underneath. This simulates ashes and cinders being blown into the air, then settling in this characteristic cone formation.
It was surprisingly fun to do. (And a bit messy.)
We don't really need a picture of each child having his or her turn, but at least we can see the cinder cone getting larger as more eruptions occur.
